About Us
Hi! We’re Megan and Greg at Five Seasons Microfarm, LLC, a climate-focused small farm in Midway Township, Duluth, MN. We produce specialty cut flowers, wood-fired maple syrup, honey, and seasonal botanical arrangements on our farm located about ten miles outside of downtown Duluth.
About our name: The “Five Seasons” in Five Seasons Microfarm references the seasons we spend outdoors, including Sugaring Season - when we make maple syrup outside over a wood fire in the season where winter and spring meet.
About our farm: We live and farm on 5.5 acres (the “micro” in microfarm) in the Lake Superior Watershed, upstream from the St. Louis River Estuary. Our property is primarily Laurentian Mixed Forest with a healthy sugarbush that supports our maple syrup production.
Our specialty cut flowers are biointensively grown in permanent raised beds above the long-established turf grass around our home. We practice no-till, regenerative farming practices. Our flowers are produced without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers. We have invested in significant education about how to grow the highest-quality cut flowers, from sprout to harvest, and we combine best practices in specialty cut flower production with climate-focused sustainable farming solutions.
Climate-focused farming is a labor-intensive choice we make because we love Duluth year-round. Clean water, cold winters, healthy air and soil, and happy pollinators are our priorities because they’re the basis of what makes Duluth special.
Why all the effort? Duluth is still wild in many ways. We grab our fly rods and chase massive steelhead trout up raging North Shore rivers in early spring. We spend summer sunset hours drifting on the St. Louis River Estuary, where eagles and herons fish in quiet waters just feet away. We watch the stars and the northern lights from our driveway. Bears, bobcats, deer, and owls live in our backyard. And when Lake Superior’s wind-whipped waters rage against the shore, we go pay reverence to the power of the coldest, deepest, largest, and cleanest of the Great Lakes.
In exchange for this everyday magic, we’re called to be responsible stewards of this incredible place. We all know that the very things that make Duluth unique are at risk like never before. Keeping Duluth special is up to all of us in the everyday choices we make, big and small. Climate-focused, small-scale regenerative farming is one of our contributions. We are proud to show you how quality and climate-consciousness can coexist.
